If you tried launching PEAK on Linux and it closes immediately without an error message or gets stuck on a black screen, the issue is missing media codecs in Valve's default Proton build.
The simplest way to fix this is to run the game with Proton-GE, maintained by GloriousEggroll on GitHub.
1. Download Proton-GE
Easy GUI Method
Install the ProtonUp-Qt utility:
- Arch Linux / CachyOS:
sudo pacman -S protonup-qt - Fedora:
sudo dnf install protonup-qt - Ubuntu / Debian / Any Distro (Flatpak):
flatpak install flathub net.davidotek.pupgui2
Open ProtonUp-Qt, click Add version, choose GE-Proton (latest version), and click Install.
Terminal Method
If you prefer downloading it via terminal, make sure curl and wget are installed:
- Arch Linux / CachyOS:
sudo pacman -S curl wget - Fedora:
sudo dnf install curl wget - Ubuntu / Debian:
sudo apt install curl wget
Run the snippet below to download and extract the latest version into Steam's compatibility directory:
bashmkdir -p ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ cd ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ curl -s https://api.github.com/repos/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/latest \ | grep "browser_download_url.*x86_64.tar.gz\"" \ | cut -d : -f 2,3 \ | tr -d ' "' \ | wget -qi - tar -xf GE-Proton*.tar.gz rm GE-Proton*.tar.gz
2. Enable in Steam
- Restart Steam so it detects the newly installed Proton-GE version.
- Right-click PEAK in your Steam library and select Properties...
- Navigate to the Compatibility tab:
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the GE-Proton version you just downloaded.
- On the General tab, make sure the Launch Options field is completely empty. If leftover launch commands from missing utilities exist, the game will fail to launch.
Click Play and PEAK will launch smoothly.
